Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) On an ultra-class hydraulic excavator like the Liebherr R9800, hydraulic-fluid condition drives valve response, thermal stability and, ultimately, how many productive hours the machine can deliver. Two companion articles set up the argument this piece quantifies: “Why Varnish Becomes an EBITDA Problem” lays out why a fixed 1,000-hour hydraulic-oil drain is a weak proxy for oil condition and why draining the reservoir does not full

How SmartOil G3™ Can Close the Loop on Hydraulic Varnish Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) Sense continuously. Sample when justified. Dose only when warranted. Verify the response. A companion article, “Why Varnish Becomes an EBITDA Problem,” lays out the case for treating hydraulic-fluid condition as a production issue rather than a lubrication footnote on ultra-class mobile mining equipment: a fixed 1,000-hour drain interval is a weak proxy for oil condition

Hydraulic Varnish, Fixed Maintenance Intervals, and the Cost of Getting the Oil Change Wrong on Ultra-Class Mining Equipment Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) The business case for varnish control rarely begins with the hydraulic oil. It begins with the machine. On ultra-class mobile mining equipment, hydraulic-fluid varnish stops being a lubrication footnote and becomes a production and EBITDA question. Using the Liebherr R9800 hydraulic excavator operating

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) The business case for varnish control rarely begins with the hydraulic oil. It begins with the machine. Introduction In Part 3 of this Varnish Series, the discussion moves from the chemistry and mechanisms of varnish formation to the practical and economic application of varnish control on ultra-class mobile mining equipment. Using the Liebherr R9800 hydraulic excavator operating in the Pilbara iron-ore environment as the p

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) Installing a fluid sensor is relatively straightforward. Determining what this data means and whether that data justifies adding treatment chemistry is considerably more challenging. The oil in a hydraulic reservoir changes continuously. The oil temperature rises after startup and falls during idle periods. The viscosity changes with temperature and shear history. Additionally, water may enter through breathers, condensation, co

The Curious Similarity Between Arterial Plaque and Hydraulic Varnish Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) An admittedly tongue-in-cheek addition to my hydraulic varnish series. After spending far too much time thinking about hydraulic oil varnish and reflecting on my own experience with cardiovascular bypass surgery 15 years ago, I recently had an uncomfortable realization: A hydraulic system may have more in common with the human cardiovascular system than mos

Could synchronized dual-laboratory oil sampling become the next standard for protecting mining-equipment warranties? Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) At 4,600 meters (15,100 feet) above sea level, a 400-ton haul truck operating at one of the worlds largest copper mines is much more than a piece of mobile equipment. It is a production asset whose reliability can influence thousands of tonnes of daily mine output. The current spot price for refined copper at US$6

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) A hydraulic or turbine-oil system does not need to suffer a dramatic failure to begin losing performance. Sometimes the first warning is a valve that responds slightly too slowly, an unexplained increase in oil temperature or a filter that does not last as long as it once did. A paper machine can be running at full production when a hydraulic valve begins responding a fraction of a second too slowly. A gas turbine may be techni

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) A failing diesel fuel injector is often treated as a maintenance problem: rough running, smoke, loss of power or rising fuel consumption. Underground, the same fault can become an air-quality and operational-safety event. Diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machines, haul trucks, jumbo drill rigs, bolters, scalers and utility vehicles work inside a ventilation system with finite capacity. Every engine adds heat, gases and diesel

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) A failed fuel injector is never a minor maintenance issue. In an underground mine, however, its consequences can develop faster and carry greater operational and safety significance than the same fault on a large open-pit haul truck. The reason is not simply that one machine is smaller. It is the combination of cylinder count, lubricant volume, duty cycle, ventilation constraints and the speed at which an injector problem can co

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) The engine may already be failing before the lab report arrives. Traditional oil analysis has earned its place in heavy-duty diesel maintenance. For decades, it has helped fleet operators understand wear metals, contamination, soot loading, oxidation, viscosity change, additive depletion and overall lubricant health. In mining, rail, marine, construction and stationary power applications, a disciplined oil analysis program remai

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) Fuel dilution monitoring remains one of the most important predictive maintenance activities for large diesel engines operating in railroads, mining, marine, backup power generation, and heavy industrial applications. Yet despite the critical importance of fuel dilution detection, many operations still depend heavily on manual oil sampling workflows developed decades ago. In a traditional workflow, maintenance personnel manually

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) For diesel powered off-highway applications, actual fuel injector lifespan fluctuates heavily based on a few distinct variables: Duty Cycle: Constant high-load mining environments or earth-moving cycles exert more pressure on solenoids and plungers, which generally reduces time between failures compared to standby stationary generators. Fuel Quality & Filtration: The single biggest factor influencing MTBF. Contamination, water, an

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) As diesel engines evolve, so do the regulations and operational demands that surround them. With modern heavy-duty diesel engines, these are responsible for larger workloads, with tighter emission tolerances, higher injection pressures, advanced combustion strategies and increased demand duty cycles. As these diesel engines evolve, traditional reactive maintenance approaches are no longer as effective and in many cases have become

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) Some may consider a fuel injector failure in a diesel engine as an insignificant since many diesel engines have more than one fuel injector, so there is some repeatability involved. However, the failure of one fuel injector can directly impact diesel engines and possibly even cause operational upsets, especially depending on the application of the diesel engine. For locomotive diesel engines any form of fuel dilution can lead t

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC) In heavy-duty diesel engines, failed fuel injectors are often the starting point for a much larger chain of destructive events. Across locomotive fleets, mining haul trucks, underground mining equipment, drilling machines, marine engines, and stationary power systems, injector degradation remains one of the leading contributors to fuel dilution, thermal stress, piston damage, and catastrophic engine failures. Understanding how we

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC A Canadian National Railway (CNR) heavy-haul freight train departs Toronto, Ontario in mid-January bound for Vancouver, British Columbia. Each of the three locomotives, modern Tier 4 GE ET44AC engines, are fueled with approximately 5,000 gallons of winterized diesel fuel prior to departure. While the fuel blend is suitable for expected conditions in Southern Ontario, the locomotives will travel more than 4,000 kilometers across mul

Article by William Gillette (LogiLube, LLC One of the most destructive and under-appreciated causes of diesel engine failure is fuel dilution. Across North American locomotive fleets, open-pit mining equipment, underground mining machines, stationary power systems, marine engines, and heavy-haul transportation assets, fuel contamination entering the crankcase lubricant can rapidly escalate into catastrophic engine damage and costly unplanned downtime if not detected early.
