Diesel Fuel Winterization: Challenges of Toronto-Vancouver Route for CNR

  • 1 min read
As the train proceeds westward, weather systems intensify across Alberta, producing extreme cold conditions capable of causing paraffin wax crystals to form within the diesel fuel. As wax crystallization progresses, fuel viscosity increases and the crystals begin accumulating on the fuel filter media. Differential pressure across the filters rises, restricting fuel flow to the engine. Left unchecked, the restriction can starve the high-pressure fuel system, resulting in loss of power, engine derate events, or complete locomotive shutdown. Such an event could strand a multi-kilometer freight train in a remote location, causing significant operational disruption, safety concerns, and financial losses.
